Why Is Frost Building Up in My Fridge or Freezer?
A light layer of frost can sometimes appear after warm, humid air enters a freezer. Thick, recurring frost or ice around vents, drawers or the rear panel is different: it can restrict airflow, reduce storage space and point to a door-seal, usage or defrost problem.
Why is frost building up in my fridge or freezer?
1. The door is not closing completely
A food package, drawer or container may prevent the door from sealing. Warm, moist air then enters and freezes. Check the full door path and rearrange anything that obstructs it.
2. The rubber seal is dirty or damaged
Food residue can create gaps along the gasket. Clean the visible seal using the method in your manual. A torn, loose or deformed seal may require replacement.
3. The door is opened frequently
Every opening introduces warm air. Frost may increase when the door is held open for a long time, especially in Malaysia’s humid climate. Decide what you need before opening the appliance and close it promptly.
4. Hot or uncovered food was stored
Warm food and uncovered liquids release moisture. Follow food-safety guidance and your refrigerator manual regarding cooling and covering food before storage.
5. Air vents are blocked
Food pressed against internal vents can restrict circulation and contribute to uneven temperatures. Keep visible air outlets clear.
6. The defrost system may have a fault
Heavy ice that returns after proper defrosting can involve a heater, sensor, fan, drain or control problem. A technician should diagnose the system before parts are replaced.
Can you remove the frost yourself?
Use only the defrost procedure provided for your model. Move food to safe cold storage, switch off the appliance if instructed and protect the floor from meltwater. Never use knives, screwdrivers, hair dryers, boiling water or other sharp or high-heat methods. These can puncture refrigerant lines, damage plastic or cause electric shock.
