Why Is My Fridge Making Noise? Normal Sounds vs Warning Signs

Refrigerators are not completely silent. Humming, gentle airflow, clicks, pops and occasional gurgling can be part of normal cooling and defrost operation. The important question is whether the sound is new, unusually loud, continuous or accompanied by poor cooling.

Common refrigerator sounds that may be normal

Humming or whirring

The compressor and internal fans operate during cooling. They may run longer after the doors have been opened repeatedly, after groceries are added or during hot weather.

Clicking, popping or cracking

Controls can click as cooling cycles start and stop. Interior materials may also expand or contract as temperatures change.

Gurgling or water sounds

Refrigerant movement and water flowing during the automatic defrost process can create gurgling, dripping or sizzling sounds.

Ice dropping

On models with an automatic ice maker, ice falling into the storage bin can produce a sudden, loud sound.

Why has my fridge become unusually noisy?

The refrigerator is not level

An unstable appliance may vibrate or rattle against the floor, cabinetry or nearby objects. Check the installation instructions before adjusting the feet.

Items are touching inside or behind it

Bottles can vibrate against each other, and the appliance may touch a wall or cabinet. Rearrange loose items and ensure the required installation clearance is maintained.

Ice is contacting a fan

A repeated scraping or ticking that changes when a door opens may involve frost near an internal fan. Do not remove panels or chip the ice with a sharp tool.

A fan, compressor or mounting component is worn

Grinding, squealing, repeated loud clicking or heavy vibration can indicate a mechanical or electrical fault. Diagnosis is especially important if cooling has also weakened.

Checks you can perform safely

  1. Identify where the sound appears to come from.
  2. Check whether bottles, trays or containers are vibrating together.
  3. Make sure the refrigerator is stable and not touching surrounding furniture.
  4. Confirm the doors close properly.
  5. Note whether the sound stops when a door opens.
  6. Record a short video so a technician can hear the sound.

When does fridge noise need attention?

  • The sound is suddenly much louder than usual
  • There is grinding, squealing or repeated rapid clicking
  • The refrigerator is not cooling properly
  • Heavy frost or water leakage appears
  • The appliance repeatedly starts and stops
  • There is a burning smell or the circuit trips

If cooling is also affected, read our guide on what to check when a fridge is not cooling.
