Why Is My Washing Machine Leaking Water?

Water around a washing machine should never be ignored. A loose hose connection, blocked dispenser or overloaded drum may be responsible, but leaks can also come from a damaged seal, pump, hose or internal component. Stop the cycle safely and identify when the water appears before deciding what to do next.

What should you do immediately?

  1. Stop the programme using the normal controls.
  2. Keep people away from wet flooring to prevent slips.
  3. If safe, switch off the machine and disconnect power without stepping in water.
  4. Turn off the water-supply taps.
  5. Contain the water with towels and protect nearby electrical items.

If water is close to a socket, plug or electrical connection, do not touch the appliance. Isolate the circuit safely and obtain professional assistance.

Why is my washing machine leaking?

1. The inlet hose connection is loose

Water may appear behind the machine while it fills. Inspect visible hose connections for moisture, cracks or bulging. Do not overtighten fittings, and replace damaged hoses with parts suitable for the model.

2. The drain hose has moved or split

A drain hose that has come out of the standpipe can release a large amount of water during draining. A kink, split or poor connection can also leak.

3. The detergent drawer is overflowing

Excess detergent, unsuitable detergent, heavy foaming or residue in the dispenser can cause water to escape from the front. Follow the detergent type and quantity specified by the machine manufacturer.

4. The door seal is dirty or damaged

On a front-load washer, trapped objects, residue or a torn rubber gasket can allow water through the door area. Wipe and inspect the visible seal without pulling or removing it.

5. The load is too large or unbalanced

Overloading can affect movement, create excess foam and push water where it should not go. Use the capacity and loading guidance in the manual.

6. An internal part is leaking

Water emerging from underneath may come from a pump, tub hose, seal or internal connection. The cabinet should not be opened by an untrained person.

Clues that help identify the source

  • Leak during filling: check visible inlet connections and dispenser area.
  • Leak during washing: inspect the door or lid area and note excessive foam.
  • Leak during draining: check the visible drain hose and its outlet.
  • Leak even when switched off: turn off the water supply and arrange inspection.

When should you book repair?

Arrange professional inspection when the source is underneath the machine, a hose or seal is damaged, the leak returns, an error code appears, or electrical components may have become wet.
