Why Is My Washing Machine Not Draining?
A washing machine that finishes with water still inside cannot complete its cycle correctly. The cause may be as simple as a kinked drain hose or an accessible filter that needs cleaning, but pump, sensor and control faults can produce similar symptoms. Start with safe checks and avoid forcing the door open.
Why is my washing machine not draining?
1. The drain hose is kinked or incorrectly positioned
Inspect the visible drain hose behind the machine without pulling or crushing it. A sharp bend can restrict water flow. The outlet must also be installed at the height and position specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. An accessible drain filter is blocked
Coins, lint, tissues and small objects can collect in the filter on models that have a user-accessible pump filter. A blockage can slow or stop draining. Use only the procedure in your model’s manual because opening the filter may release a significant amount of water.
3. The load is unbalanced
Some machines pause, redistribute the load or fail to complete the spin stage when heavy items collect on one side. Stop the programme according to the manual, redistribute suitable laundry evenly and try the approved drain or spin programme.
4. The drain pump or another component has failed
A damaged or jammed pump, wiring problem, faulty sensor or control-board issue may prevent draining. These faults need proper diagnosis because replacing parts based only on the symptom can waste money.
Safe checks to try first
- Pause or switch off the machine using the normal controls.
- Check the display for an error code and consult the manual.
- Inspect the visible drain hose for bends or crushing.
- Confirm the hose outlet has not moved from its correct position.
- If your manual identifies a user-accessible filter, follow its drainage and cleaning procedure carefully.
- Run the approved drain or spin programme after correcting a simple issue.
Safety note: Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Disconnect power before cleaning a filter if instructed by the manufacturer, prepare a shallow container and towels, and never open a locked door by force.
What if the door is locked with water inside?
The lock normally remains engaged to prevent flooding. Do not pry the door open. Some front-load machines provide an emergency drain hose near the pump filter, but the exact procedure varies. Follow the manual for your model or arrange professional assistance.
When should you request repair?
- The machine still will not drain after safe checks
- The pump hums but no water moves
- There is grinding, scraping or a burning smell
- Water is leaking from underneath the machine
- The same drain error returns repeatedly
- The filter cannot be accessed or safely removed
